Integrity, justice, citizenship, teamwork, consistency—these are the themes that ground the work of Jerry Manuel Sr. and son Anthony Manuel, both on and off the field. Jerry, known in Major League Baseball as The Sage for his wisdom as a manager (he ultimately joined the Chicago White Sox where he helped guide the team to over 500 wins) and son Anthony, a minor league coach for the Cincinnati Reds, are using their success as a ladder to impact the next generation of athletes. Through the Jerry Manuel Foundation and MLB Develops, the two are helping to build a baseball field at Leataata Floyd Elementary School in Sacramento, California so the predominately African American youth in that community have an opportunity to play ball and to build values that come with being a part of a team.
Creating community and opportunity for generations to come? That’s beautiful.
