As Pride Month has come to a close, Youth to the People was honored to help celebrate the Los Angeles LGBT Center’s Senior Prom this year. Recognized as the largest facility in the world providing services for the LGBT community, the Los Angeles LGBT Center has annually hosted Senior Prom for decades during the last week of Pride. This year’s disco themed event continued the tradition of giving LGBTQ+ older adults a blast from the past in producing a boogie wonderland. Youth to the People along with brands OUAI, Healthy Spot, MAC Cosmetics and Waymo partnered to make the event an unforgettable experience. Hundreds came together that were unable to experience (or enjoy) their own high school prom for a dazzling night of connection and community.
For the YTTP team that attended, Senior Prom was one of the most wholesome and heartwarming nights experienced. According to Lulu Yohannes, Senior Manager of Social, “You could feel the love, joy, and—most importantly—pride radiating through every hug, laugh, and dance move. The energy in the room was magnetic, with stories being shared across generations and chosen family coming together to celebrate freely and authentically.”
A few special moments were captured through some of the attendees including Lynn, a trans woman and true LA icon: “Pride is about being a community and empowering each other. It’s about remembering our past and working for a better future.”
And from Rusty, who helped raise the funds to build the LGBT Center in Hollywood: “Youth to me means the promise and hope of improvement. It's one more try. From generation to generation, it gives us the chance to get rid of more and more prejudice and hate, and to be open to equality and acceptance... The ability to love and accept starts inside of yourself.
Pride Senior Prom is a beautiful reminder of how far we’ve come—and how much more love there is to share.
