Cell renewal is exactly as it sounds. Cells on the surface layer of our skin, known as the epidermis, are constantly “dying” and “shedding” as newer cells move up from the deeper layers of skin to replace, or renew, them. When this process does not happen as it should, it can lead to a buildup of dead cells causing clogged pores, breakouts, peeling, uneven texture, hyperpigmentation, etc. This cell renewal process typically takes about 28 days for an adult, but it slows down as we age leading to fine lines, wrinkles, dullness, texture, etc. However, with the right exfoliant, you can keep the cell renewal process moving like normal.
I’m sure most of you – if not all – are familiar with exfoliation in some way. Whether it is a current part of your routine, or you haven’t yet implemented it because you’ve been too nervous. I understand. Exfoliation is a crucial step to achieving your skin goals, and it’s important to understand the why, what, and how before you start.
Alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) are my favorite category of exfoliants for clients wanting to achieve a beautiful glow. AHAs break the chains holding dead skin cells together causing them to slough off and reveal a more radiant, even tone and smooth texture. They are my go-to for clients with concerns for dryness, dullness, dark spots, uneven tone, or rough texture. The Kombucha + 10% AHA Power Exfoliant is the perfect exfoliant to include in your routine if you have these concerns. In addition to its blend of 7% lactic acid and 3% glycolic acid, it has betaine, glycerin, and arginine, known hydrators that attract and help maintain moisture to offset dryness. I recommend incorporating this exfoliant into your PM routine starting once per week and gradually progressing up to 3 times per week if tolerated. I recommend following with the Superberry Hydrate + Glow Dream Mask for overnight hydration that will leave your skin looking supple and feeling hydrated.
As always, make sure you’re protecting the skin, body included, with a broad spectrum SPF30 or higher. Reapply every 2 hours if you’ll be exposed to UV rays through outdoor activity, windows, or driving, regardless of weather, but especially this summer.
I hope you’ve been enjoying “Ask an Esti”, and you’re continuously leaving understanding the “why” behind the “what”. Join me next time to discuss why body exfoliation is a step you don’t want to skip in your shower routine. Until next time, remember, Healthy skin starts with Superfoods!
