The only thing scarier than not having a costume ready for Halloween? Removing the elaborate makeup painted on to complement said last-minute get-up at the end of the night. Have no fear—we enlisted the help of Jacob Tomás del Rosario, Youth To The People’s Director of Field Sales + Education, to break down the skin-cleansing routine the YTTP team will be turning to on Oct. 31. No tricks here, just treats.
Whether you’re a longtime skincare aficionado or a newly minted convert, you’re likely already acquainted with one of the first complexion commandments: Always wash your face (and wash off your makeup!) before bed. It’s a rule we should all be following to help remove makeup, sunscreen, dirt, and grime that may contribute to skin congestion and blemishes.
The same is enforced on the scariest night of the year—aka Halloween—when layers of foundation, eyeshadow, and the like are meticulously applied. The trick to effectively cleansing the skin of these impurities is by completing a two-step double-cleansing routine.
First things first, apply YTTP’s Superberry Dream Cleansing Balm, a flash-melting cleansing balm that boasts moringa, jojoba, goji berry extracts, and more—a must-have remedy for particularly heavy makeup.
“The Dream Balm shines best when it comes to helping to remove stubborn, tough-to-remove sunscreen and makeup,” says del Rosario of the formula, which helps to rapidly dissolve long-wear formulas while gently aiding the removal of excess oils and impurities. How to use: Simply warm the balm in dry hands until it has transformed into an oil, then massage that into try skin—giving extra attention to particularly stubborn, heavy makeup—then finally wet hands and continue massaging until the oil emulsifies into a milk. Rinse thoroughly with water.
Next, we recommend following up with YTTP’s Superfood Cleanser, a gentle gel cleanser that’s formulated to help remove makeup, impurities, excess oil, and sebum without stripping the skin. How to use: Keep your face wet from rinsing the Dream Balm, then dispense 1-2 pumps into wet hands, rub together into a light lather, and massage into your face and neck for 30-60 seconds. It’s all that separates you from a freshly rejuvenated canvas.
Says del Rosario, “Creating an environment in your skin where it’s a blank canvas ready for every product that you use thereafter is just the best way to set up your routine for success.”
As for what comes next, feel free to continue with your usual nighttime regimen, making sure that—like usual—you layer on your products from thinnest to thickest consistency and texture.
Trust us: This post-Halloween skincare ritual is so streamlined and simple, it’s scary-good.
