What Are Bioidentical Actives?

23 Nov 2020

Take a look at Youth To The People’s pro-grade vegan formulas and you’ll often see hyaluronic acid, a hydrating substance found naturally in your skin. Apply it topically, and it replenishes your skin’s hydration. As Youth To The People’s Director of Education, Laura Cline, explains, vegan hyaluronic acid is a great example of a bioidentical active, an ingredient—like vitamins, nutrients, oils, and the like—that closely mimic or replenish something already found in your body that benefits your skin’s health.

“When you apply bioidentical actives topically, they’re accepted immediately, because your body recognizes it, ‘Oh, I know what that is! I’m going to put it to work right away,’” says Cline. “We already have hyaluronic acid in our bodies and in our skin, so when you apply it, you’re replenishing something that already exists.”

Cline compares bioidentical actives like hyaluronic acid and squalane (which is very much like your skin’s natural oils) to a daily multivitamin. You might not need everything in a multivitamin every day, but it doesn’t hurt to have the extra support. Bioidentical actives come in all different forms and because they complement what naturally occurs in your skin, they likely won’t sensitize or cause harm to the skin.

“Bioidentical actives are readily-accepted ingredients that're going to help better your skin health,” Cline says.

Built on a 40-year family history of understanding skin health and bioidentical actives, YTTP is constantly searching for innovative skincare solutions steeped in science. According to Cline, bioidentical actives are often better for the planet, too.

“Our hyaluronic acid is made in a lab. It’s still bioidentical because it’s hyaluronic acid at its core, but the way that it’s developed is synthetic,” she says. With the added benefit of being cruelty-free, “Our bioidentical ingredients are typically more sustainable because they’re created as a synthetic thanks to chemistry, utilizing sustainable sources and having less impact on the environment” Cline says. “Part of our Good to the People ethos is looking for sustainable sources for formulations.”
