The Benefits of Ashwagandha for Skin

10 Aug 2020

Youth To The People’s adaptogen blend was crafted to help your skin adapt—after all, ”adapt” is the root word—so each element of the blend serves a unique purpose. Reishi mushroom, for example, specifically targets redness and hydrates skin, but we’re here to talk about ashwagandha, which helps your skin respond better to stress. If you’ve ever likened the state of your skin to a roller coaster ride, ashwagandha might be the adaptogen you’re looking for. It is known for helping to calm skin and for keeping it from experiencing big shifts in stress levels.

“Stress in skin can show up in different ways visibly, and it might be an immediate visible response or take years to see the visible damage of stress,” Laura Cline, YTTP’s Director of Education, says. “Ashwagandha is in our adaptogenic blend to be calming, soothing, and to help reduce stress.”

Ashwagandha is a powerful antioxidant that works to prevent oxidative stress and cell breakdown while actively fending off external stressors, pollutants, and irritants for your skin’s health.

Overall, Cline compares skincare to a multi-vitamin. It might be beneficial the day of, but the longer you use it, the better it’ll be able to assist you. And with any antioxidant, ashwagandha included, continued use helps your skin become less stressed over time. “When your skin is less stressed, you have less breakdown in skin function,” Cline says.

But ashwagandha doesn’t end with skincare; in fact, it helps your body respond to internal stress, too. Ashwagandha is widely recognized for its ability to lower cortisol levels, which are linked to anxiety and stress. When you can feel internal stress rising, or when you’re heading into a stressful season of life, Cline recommends taking an adaptogenic blend supplement with ashwagandha.
