The Downtown Women’s Center is the only shelter in Los Angeles focused on assisting women living in homelessness or transitioning out of homelessness. For forty years they’ve been showing up for women, growing their list of firsts and onlys: the only health services provider for women in the area; the first provider of women-focused housing in the US; and one of the only organizations to consistently ask homeless women what homeless women need.
They’ve made it their mission to end homelessness through housing, wellness, employment, and advocacy. Located in Skid Row, the DWC is a mere two miles from our Youth To The People headquarters in downtown Los Angeles, a reminder that we don’t have to look far to be Good To The People. Last holiday season, our LAHQ put together hundreds of toiletry kits to make self-care possible for women using the DWC’s daily shower facilities. This holiday season we’re manufacturing and donating socks—warm, durable socks are one of the most requested items at shelters—and activating our network of people who care to collect donations on behalf of the DWC, in the largest drive Youth To The People has organized to date.
Here’s to starting your holiday shopping off in the most positive way possible: giving someone else warm, dry feet, and a moment of self-care this winter.
