Niacinamide and retinal (with an A) are hero ingredients for a reason.
Retinal and niacinamide are powerhouse ingredients that individually provide amazing benefits to our skin. However, some skin enthusiasts may be wondering if their skincare faves are compatible when used together. Luckily, we have Laura Cline, Youth To The People’s Senior Director of Product Development and Education, here to address whether it’s advised to use retinal and niacinamide together.
The moment of truth: Can I use retinal and niacinamide together?
The answer is yes! Retinal and niacinamide are actually the hero ingredients in Youth To The People’s latest gamechanger launch, the aptly named Retinal + Niacinamide Youth Serum . In short, retinal and niacinamide are safe (and beneficial!) to use together because niacinamide supports the skin’s moisture barrier while retinal goes to work—meaning results with a lower risk of irritation.
The benefits of niacinamide and retinal are complementary.
“On its own, niacinamide is known to have a lot of benefits as a B vitamin,” says Cline. “With continued use, too, you can see visible improvement in texture and pore size. There are also improvements on less visible things like barrier health and moisture retention.” Pairing niacinamide with retinal will provide excellent results because retinal improves the overall appearance of the skin by balancing any uneven skin complexion, smoothing out texture, and reducing fine lines and wrinkles—all signs of premature aging.
For people with sensitive skin may be hesitant to try retinoids, which have a reputation of causing skin irritation, niacinamide is a great supportive partner. Niacinamide supports and strengthens the moisture barrier by hydrating the top layer of the epidermis. Having a healthy moisture barrier helps improve our skin’s reaction to retinal, which helps prevent potential dryness and redness.
Also key: retinal (that’s with an A) is less irritating than other forms of retinoids including retinol (with an O) and prescription Tretinoin, even though retinal is the most potent dose of retinoids next to an Rx .
Pairing niacinamide and retinal together is also great for reducing excess production of oil. Excessive oiliness can happen when our skin overcompensates for dry or dehydrated skin—but niacinamide does two major jobs : oil control and moisture retention. Retinal also balances oil production. When the two are combined, we see results—like less congestion—occur faster.
