How Young People Can Impact The Election

03 Aug 2024

Whether you’re a first-time voter or curious about your options, there’s no doubt that young people will have a huge impact on the 2024 general election. It’s estimated that four million Americans turn eighteen every year — meaning that with sixteen million newly eligible voters, Gen Z and millennials will account for nearly 40% of votes in this year’s election.

And yet, only 23% of eligible young people (ages 18-29) turned out to vote in the 2022 midterms, and more than one in five newly eligible voters who weren’t registered to vote said it was because they didn’t know how. That’s where Youth To The People and I Am A Voter come in — we’re partnering up to provide everyone with the information they need to feel confident and empowered at the polls.

On November 5, the President, Vice President, all 435 seats in the House of Representatives and one-third of the Senate is up for election. There are also state and local elections happening all over the country.

Here’s how young people can impact the results:

Millennials and Gen Z make up 45% of eligible voters — the largest voter bloc in U.S. history.

57% of young voters say they’re “extremely likely” to vote in 2024.

Since the 2022 midterms, an estimated eight million Americans turned 18 and became eligible to vote. Historically, this same number of voters have beat the vote margins to impact major elections in states like Pennsylvania, Georgia, Arizona, and Wisconsin.

In past years, young voters have voted at historic rates compared to previous decades, and their choices on the ballot have influenced key elections. Now, more than ever, it’s important to use your voice and make it heard.
