In her brand-new EP, Los Angeles-based pop artist Julietta levitates above it all. Using her music as a vehicle for honest, open self-expression, Julietta—whose battles with anxiety and depression have made way for solitary reflection—spends six tracks meditating on themes like optimism, freedom, independence, and creating your own narrative despite the expectations of others. Below, take a listen to Julietta’s new EP, Levitate, and check out her answers to Youth To The People’s Youth Questionnaire
Question 1: How do you help others?
I believe I am helping others by being open and honest about my experiences in life through my music. I believe that by sharing my journey, others are inspired to share theirs. This way we can both give and take some more insight with us. I also believe I am able to help others by sharing my love and gratitude for life. Every day I make sure to make people smile, feel seen and heard.
Question 2: What will your greatest impact be on this earth?
I hope my greatest impact on this earth can continue to be helping the planet, the animals, and the youth. I will continue to educate myself in how I can make wiser decisions everyday to minimize my contribution to the pollution in our water and air. I will continue to abstain from consuming animal products as much as I can. I will teach others what I have learned, and I will continue to stay open, learning from those who have studied more than I.
Question 3: Where are you most free?
I am most free when I am dancing and singing with my best friends and family. When all the people I love surround me ready to have a good time. Like when they would come out and support me at my shows. I miss that :( I also feel most free when I am submerged in nature, with no humans at all. Just me and mother nature.
Question 4: When were you recently perfectly content?
Ha! Hmmmm. Being perfectly content has been challenging nowadays. But, I would say I have a recent memory of being perfectly content when I looked back at 2020 and realized that all of what I thought was weakness running through me was actually my strength. All of the “bad times” were good signs that change is on its way, and it's not going to take no for an answer :)
Question 5: What do you dream of?
I dream of a complete freedom from the chains of my mind, to experience complete fluidity in everything I do. I suffered from anxiety most of my life. It’s put many obstacles in my way. Despite being grateful for the lessons anxiety has taught me, I dream of one day being free from the fears and constraints that it's caused. I know I’m on my way, awareness is my proof :)
Question 8: What is your coolest trick?
I can make you fall in love with me by making you a tomato sauce pasta :)
Question 12: To you, what is the most soothing sound?
The most soothing sound to me is the sound of the ocean. The sound of the waves crashing against the shore... It’s a reminder that nature has a continuous flow, whether we are a part of it or not. It’s a reminder that we are a part of something bigger than ourselves. That always brings me back to center.
Question 14: If you could encourage others to support something you believe to be universally beneficial, what would it be?
Minimizing, or if one can, terminating their consumption of animal products and fast fashion. The animals on our planet have suffered so much at the hands of humans, we owe them recognition and gratitude. We should think before we eat, acknowledge the pain felt in order to feed us. The suffering animals endure while alive at the factories... I think we should honor our food more than we do, we are unconscious with the way we consume as a culture. I hope people can learn to tune into what they are eating. Make better decisions.
Fast fashion felt like it was peaking before Covid hit. I am happy people took a break from consuming during this time. I hope these months of solitude have taught us that we really don't need so many things to be happy. I have moved 10 times in the past nine months. I have let go of so many possessions I thought I needed when I had a home. Now that I am a nomad, I really understand that I don't need much. Having more things just weighs me down, making it harder to move around and be free. I hope people can learn to live with less, and when they decide to add something to their lives, to take the time to really think about it... “Will this really make me happy? Or am I buying out of impulse?” This way of being can really help minimize our carbon footprints and create a more conscious and sustainable planet.
