You may not hear people wax poetic about vitamin K as much as they do vitamins A, C, E, and B, but that’s not to say it’s not a superior ingredient with a whole host of skincare benefits to offer. You’ll find the powerful soothing agent in dark leafy greens like spinach and kale, along with nutrient-rich parsley, romaine, and broccoli. That being said, spinach and kale are far and away the most commonly used forms of vitamin K—it’s why you’ll find it in the Superfood Cleanser—when it comes to skincare, purely due to their highly potent concentrations. And vitamin K can be an especially beneficial ingredient for folks with dry, sensitive, and reactive skin types.
As Dee Leung, Sales + Education Executive at Youth To The People, explains, vitamin K can also be super beneficial for anyone struggling with a compromised barrier.
“Vitamin K helps to repair and restore our protective skin barrier, and when our barrier is healthy, our skin looks its best,” she explains matter-of-factly. “Ultimately a strong barrier retains hydration, creating plump, smooth skin.”
On top of that very major benefit, Leung says vitamin K is also a superb ingredient for soothing redness and irritation caused by inflammation—whether it be as a result of a skin condition like eczema or rosacea, a sunburn, or even over-exfoliating.
“A topical application of vitamin K strengthens blood vessels, decreases swelling, and calms redness,” says Leung. “There also aren’t known irritations associated with using vitamin K, which makes it a great option for sensitive skin types.”
So, just to quickly recap, vitamin K is ideal for the following:
- Calming red, angry skin
- Healing a compromised barrier
- Strengthening blood vessels
- Reducing swelling and inflammation
- Anyone with reaction-prone skin
How to utilize vitamin K in your skincare routine
Youth To The People happens to be a huge fan of vitamin K for all of the aforementioned reasons—hence why it’s infused into several different products, including the Superfood Cleanser, the Superfood Air-Whip Moisture Cream, and the Superfood Eye Cream. Ideally, to reap the best results possible, you’ll want to start by cleansing with the spinach and kale-packed Superfood Cleanser, as this will gently clean out your pores while simultaneously hydrating and soothing the skin. After cleansing, apply a few dots of the Superfood Eye Cream in gentle patting motions while your skin is still damp to aid in absorption, and then immediately follow up with a serum such as the 15% 15% Vitamin C + Clean Caffeine Energy Serum and a hydration-packed moisturizer like the Superfood Air-Whip Moisture Cream to lock in hydration and calm the skin. If your skin is dry, stressed-out, and in desperate need of a soothing fix, try sticking to this regimen every day, twice a day, and you should see a significant difference in less than a week.
