After more than a year of social distancing and Zoom meetings, it’s time to hit refresh and embrace the newness of spring. We’re talking about shedding what you don’t need, taking charge of what you do—and tailoring your skincare routine to follow suit. And, as with every year, there are plenty of new tips, techniques, and ingredients to try out with the seasonal shift.
While life for the moment is still some way from how we once knew it, there’s also a lot of fun to be had by shaking things up as we prepare for literal—and figurative—sunnier days ahead. To that end, we tapped five of Youth To The People’s favorite skincare experts to share exactly what they’re doing to revitalize their regimen from home, and all the tools and products bringing them joy this spring.

“I love using cooling tools, like an ice roller or gua sha, as the weather gets hotter. Both help with lymphatic drainage, depuffing, and soothing. They also help products absorb better. My seasonal hack is to use a couple of drops of YTTP’s Superberry Hydrate + Glow Dream Oil, grab either tool straight from the freezer, and go in gently contouring upwards. There are some amazing YouTube videos that show you how to master the correct technique.”

“As we transition into spring, shifting our focus to notice the environmental changes around us is key for our skincare routines. This is a small (but mighty) trick that can help you adapt your skincare year-round, but especially when moving into spring from winter. And, since we’re all still wearing masks, it’s important to make sure that you’re changing yours often to prevent humidity which can cause congestion. One of my favorite ways to combat maskne is through facials and YTTP’s Superclay Purify + Clear Power Mask—which is essentially a facial at home.”

“My springtime hero ingredients are anything that'll bring me hydration. I appreciate a good hyaluronic acid and an antioxidant serum, like vitamin C. For exfoliating, I like to use more gentle acids like BHAs or PHAs. Also: the skin thrives with cool temperatures during these warmer months, so when cleansing, use cool water to rinse and carry a personal hydrating mist with you. It's the perfect way to refresh the skin throughout the day.”

“Despite the lovely new blooms, this season can be a tricky time for skin. With pollen and allergens at an all-time high, pay special attention to your hydration levels internally and topically, and look out for histamine reactions in the form of general inflammation, dermatitis, or eczema flare-ups. Drink lots of water, stock up on local honey products to help combat allergies, and buff up your routine with a hyaluronic acid-based serum. I also recommend loading up on antioxidants to protect skin from environmental stressors. The easiest way to do this is to incorporate a delicious oil into your routine to lock in moisture and provide the skin with necessary nutrients, like omega fatty acids 3, 6, and 9.”

“Many people want to switch things up with the seasons, but I don’t believe in changing ingredients, aside from possibly lessening the use of retinoids if you do a lot of activities outside in the sun. Antioxidants actually enhance protection with SPF—and you can never have too many of those! If you do want to experiment, my best tip is to only try one new thing at a time. That way, if your skin loves or doesn’t love something, you’ll know what it is. Also, treat your mask like underwear if you want to avoid maskne! Get a bunch of reusable ones so you have a fresh one each day and do mask laundry once a week. Look for those made from really soft materials to reduce chafing and irritation, and avoid wearing a lot of emollient products under where the mask sits to prevent a buildup of moisture and bacteria.”
