By Manna Zel (she/they)
When her high school boyfriend was unexpectedly incarcerated, LOONY found catharsis by releasing homemade tracks, which led to her 2018 EP, titled PART 1, and eventually comparisons to living legends Erykah Badu and Sade. Before she could speak, the Toronto born and raised artist (née Kira Huszar) was introduced to a sonic landscape that can best be described as varied—her music now melds jazz, gospel, hip hop, and R+B and has earned a stamp of approval from the likes of British singer and composer Sir Elton John and American media executive Ebro Darden of Hot 97 and Apple Music’s Beats 1 Radio.
Question 03: Where are you most free?
Whenever I’m by or in a large body of water. I’m not really sure what it is, but something inside of me just lifts. I feel lighter and more in tune with myself, - as well as everything around me.
Question 04: When were you recently perfectly content?
I went on a walk last weekend and it felt like spring was finally here in Toronto. Everything was damp from the night before and the air just smelled like fresh earth. And then, there were all these spring flowers that had bloomed overnight it seemed. It was really nice.
Question 11: What is your favorite flower or tree, and why?
I love weeping willows. They’re gorgeous to look at, and somehow just very comforting to sit under. They just feel magical.
Question 18: Which is richer: your inner life or outer? Why?
This one’s tough. My instinct would be to say my inner world since I’m able to get pulled in very easily by anything going on in front of me. Sometimes just the way light hits something near me can spark my imagination and have me lost in my head for a while, dreaming up something.
Question 22: What would your pet tell us about you?
That if I love you, I really, really love to snuggle.
