When it comes down to it, the more you prep and pamper your skin before applying makeup, the better it’s going to look. I mean, just think about what happens when you try to put concealer or foundation on an area of your skin that’s dry and flaky—it ends up looking all cracked and cakey, right? Right. That’s exactly why makeup artists put so much emphasis on skincare and take the time to exfoliate and moisturize their clients’ complexions before doing anything else.
“Moisturizing as a skin-prep step is vital in the process if you're hoping to have any complexion makeup wear longer and look more like skin,” says Youth To The People’s Director of Field Sales + Education, Jacob del Rosario. He notes that this is especially important around the eye area as this is typically where we notice the beginning signs of aging, like fine lines, wrinkles, texture, and loss of density or elasticity.
“The eye area has so much movement that it can cause your foundation and concealer to shift and move,” adds del Rosario. “Eye cream helps by plumping the skin around the eye with hydration and moisture, creating a smoother surface for concealers to lay down on.”
Youth To The People’s Superfood Hydrate + Firm Peptide Eye Cream is perfect for this as it contains skin-plumping hyaluronic acid—plus it’s featherlight and therefore won’t disrupt any makeup you put on top. All you need is a tiny dollop—tap a clean finger into the jar for the right amount—for each undereye and you’re good to go.
“Think of applying your concealer to a mirror compared to applying it on top of a texture like sandpaper,” adds del Rosario. “If you notice visible texture on your skin when applying your complexion makeup, you should prep with a little exfoliation as this will help create a smooth surface for makeup to adhere to.” For this, the Yerba Mate Resurfacing Energy Facial is amazing as it’s a fast-acting, enzyme-packed formula that gently but effectively removes dead skin cell buildup, leaving your complexion baby-soft and smooth. Using the Kombucha + 11% AHA Exfoliation Power Toner on a daily basis is another great way to keep your skin soft, smooth, and ready for makeup, as it lifts dead skin while minimizing pores and texture. Just make sure to save this step for the face, keeping clear of the delicate eye area.
To ensure you get the best results from your concealer, you should start by assessing your skin to see if it needs to be exfoliated. If that’s the case, use one of the aforementioned products to remove dead skin buildup to create a clean canvas for your makeup—then load up on your eye cream and a hydrating face moisturizer such as the Superfood Air-Whip Moisture Cream or the richer Adaptogen Deep Moisture Cream.
Once your skin is exfoliated and adequately moisturized, apply your concealer with fingers or a damp beauty sponge as this helps the formula melt into the skin and look most natural. Once you’re done blending out your concealer, finish with a spritz of the Adaptogen Soothe + Hydrate Activated Mist for added hydration that will ensure your face makeup looks fabulous all day.
