How to Alleviate Redness + Irritation

Redness and irritation can manifest due to myriad different internal and external factors, including but not limited to: stress, over-exfoliation, and your environment. Today though, we’re discussing how the harsh winter weather specifically plays a part in causing these skin concerns — plus, the soothing products that can help keep inflammation to a minimum this season. Because when humidity drops and temps plummet, too, adjusting your skincare regimen as needed is super key. Just ask Youth To The People’s Senior Regional Sales and Education Executive, Jacob Tomás del Rosario, how to alleviate redness and irritation:

“You should always be updating your routine when there’s a dramatic shift in humidity and temperature outside. Always,” he says.

Update how, though, exactly? Well, if you’re struggling with red and inflamed skin as a result of the severe weather and aired indoor heat, then your first order of business should be incorporating a gentle cleanser into your routine to help nourish the skin and keep your pH balanced. (This way, any products you apply afterward will absorb better.)

CLEANSE

Youth To The People’s Superfood Cleanser is a great option as it contains a blend of skin-loving antioxidants coupled with superior hydrators like glycerin and panthenol (a form of vitamin B5).

MOISTURIZE

As far as moisturizer is concerned, del Rosario suggests the Adaptopten Deep Moisture Cream, as it’s made with the same powerfully soothing pentapeptide as the mist—plus even more calming agents like aloe vera, an adaptogen blend, and allantoin. 

“It’s amazing because it has emollience but it never feels congestive or heavy,” says del Rosario. “We specifically formulated it with bio-available emollients that the body will recognize so it absorbs into the skin better.”

SLEEP ON IT

Another redness-reducing recommendation from del Rosario is the Superberry Hydrate + Glow Dream Mask, which is made with soothing squalane and prickly pear, as well as skin-brightening vitamin C. 

“If you’re exposed to temperamental environments, this mask is great because it’s an occlusive treatment, meaning it locks in moisture and has a liquid bandage-like effect on the skin,” he says. “Typically it’s recommended for use at night, but if you live in an environment where it’s bitter cold, you can definitely use it as a day moisturizer to protect your skin.”
