Yerba Mate in Skincare? Yes, Definitely.

30 Nov 2022

Native to South America, yerba mate (aka Ilex paraguariensis) is a plant that can be brewed into a highly-caffeinated, antioxidant-abundant tea that boasts strong, earth-tasting notes. It’s a big part of everyday culture in Argentina, where passersby can be seen casually drinking the beverage—prepared either hot or cold—out of a gourd and straw. It’s such an Argentinian staple that the ingredient even got a shout-out by Colombian singer Maluma; in the 2020 hit song “Porfa (Remix),” he sings, “Me hace falta cómo al Argentino el mate.” Direct translation: “I need you like an Argentine needs mate.”

They’re definitely onto something. Yerba mate, which is used both medicinally and socially, is touted as having a higher concentration of antioxidants than green tea, and contains anti-inflammatory properties. Given the amazing benefits, It’s no wonder people are turning to yerba mate for skincare.

If you’re a longtime YTTP fan, you’re probably already well-acquainted with yerba mate, currently found in the Yerba Mate Resurfacing Energy Facial and the 15% Vitamin C + Caffeine Energy Serum. Not familiar? Read up on the benefits of each below.

Yerba Mate Resurfacing Energy Facial

“The Energy Facial breaks up the ‘glue’ holding the dead skin together,” says Jacob Tomás del Rosario, Youth To The People’s Director of Field Sales + Education. With gentle circular motions and plenty of water, the Energy Facial polishes the dead skin cells away. It’s a two-minute facial that delivers results fast, boosted with caffeine from yerba mate and guayusa. After one use, 100% of participants said their skin looked softer and 96% said their skin felt smoother.*

Curious, but not ready to commit? Try a travel-size of the Energy Facial.

15% Vitamin C + Caffeine Energy Serum

Bonus points if you choose to follow up the Energy Facial with this vitamin C serum, which is better absorbed by freshly exfoliated skin, thus highlighting the benefits of this serum—a blend of superleafs yerba mate and guayusa and “a really mindful selection of synthetic vitamin C that’s stable and not volatile to air, light, or time,” according to del Rosario. The result: an invigorating serum that helps to immediately brighten, visibly reduce morning puffiness, and hydrate.

Same goes here—if you want to check it out first before buying the full-size, add a travel-size of the Energy Serum to cart.

Now you can enjoy your cup of mate and elevate your skincare routine, too.
