Latinx Creatives Mel Depaz and Rachel Gomez Take the Youth Questionnaire

03 Oct 2022

To recognize the important historical and cultural contributions of individuals and groups of Latin and Hispanic descent, we are excited to celebrate Latinx Heritage Month from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15.

Latinx artists have always been style creators and vibe originators at the forefront of arts and culture across the globe,” says Paulina Lopez, marketing director at Foot Locker. “This year, Foot Locker LA celebrated these cutting-edge artists with a special event at our Downey Community Store to give Latinx-owned brands, designers, and community leaders a moment to come together, and celebrate our heritage and contributions to the culture!”

Youth To The People was proud to celebrate alongside our friends at Foot Locker LA at their Community Store earlier this month.

Below you’ll find the Youth Questionnaire responses from two of those celebrated creatives, Rachel Gomez and Mel Depaz. Read on, and happy Latinx Heritage Month!

THE QUESTIONS:

Question 02: What will your greatest impact be on this earth?
Mel Depaz: Making art that comes from a sentimental place and inspiring others to be creative.

Questions 03: Where are you most free?
Mel Depaz: When traveling and seeing all the artwork in the town then transmuting that energy and making something. Making art from a fresh experience.

Rachel Gomez: I’m most free during my body movement time. Whether it’s taking a walk or riding my indoor cycle. It’s the one time during the day when I can tap out from my world and tap within for at least an hour. Moving my body, in a way that feels good to me, is the ultimate freedom.

Question 04: When were you recently perfectly content?
Mel Depaz: When I was painting a mural in August, my parents came to visit with some food. They started painting with me and I realized how blessed I am for their support.

Question 05: What do you dream of?
Mel Depaz: I dream of doing animation and painting murals, literally.

Question 07: Describe something that inspired change in your perspective.
Mel Depaz: What you focus on grows really!

Question 12: To you, what is the most soothing sound?
Mel Depaz: The sound of the breeze in the trees.

Question 15: What is your personal goal for this year, month, or day?
Rachel Gomez: My personal goal for the year is to practice detachment and make it a part of my everyday life. I am so much more than just a mom or an entrepreneur. I am learning to detach myself from titles and to embrace new things. It’s my way of showing the world that a young Latina like myself can be so much more than what we’ve told them to be. I am a multi-hyphenate Latina who is ready to break away from things that no longer serve me. That is how I'm gonna keep my spirit young, fun, and free for the rest of my life.

Mel Depaz: To actively take the steps necessary to evolve into the person I want to be. Even when I don’t feel like it.

Question 20: What does it mean to you to dream beyond?
Rachel Gomez: To dream beyond means to believe in my plans. To believe that I am capable and worthy of creating a blueprint. Not just for me but to leave something behind that the next gen of young girls can look to and see that anything is possible.

Question 26: What does it mean to live your truth?
Rachel Gomez: To live in my truth means that I show up every day as myself and I give it the best that I can give. I’ve put years of work into myself which brings me the confidence to walk in my journey as Rachel.
