[VIDEO] In Honor of National Kale Day

06 Oct 2021

What is kale? And where did it come from? In honor of National Kale Day, Youth To The People is offering you a brief history of your favorite superfood.

Found in many of your favorite YTTP formulas, kale is full of antioxidants, which work by scavenging for free radicals, which they neutralize before they can oxidize and damage other cells, according to YTTP’s Director of Field Sales + Education, Jacob Tomás del Rosario.

When free radicals aren’t neutralized, in the skin we can notice increased hyperpigmentation, sensitivity, a loss of collagens, and a reduction in overall skin function. This is where antioxidants come in to save the day.

Kale contains vitamins A, K, E, and C which are excellent antioxidants both when ingested and applied topically in skincare, which is why YTTP formulates with kale in the Mandelic Acid + Superfood Unity Exfoliant, the Superfood Cleanser, Superfood Air-Whip Moisture Cream, and Superfood Hydrate + Firm Peptide Eye Cream. These vitamins help your skin look younger and healthier. Vitamin C is an antioxidant that’s great for brightening your skin’s appearance; it can aid in brightening complexion (goodbye, dark spots!) and gets rid of fine lines and free radicals. Vitamin E—also an antioxidant—moisturizes and protects your skin from sun damage, while vitamin K heals any scars or dark spots. [Read more on that here.]

Phytonutrients, which are natural compounds produced by plants that keep them healthy and protected from external stressors, are found naturally in kale, and they are pretty great for your skin, too. They are antinflammatory, which can help prevent against things like puffiness. Between the phytonutrients and the antioxidants, kale is a wonderfully protective skincare ingredient all around.
